Faith and Determination

Often in life, we are faced with an “impossible” task, an undertaking that invokes fear and doubt about our abilities and courage. As we step into it with faith, are we surprised when we find strength? Was that strength there before we started? If the difficulty did not exist, would we have found the courage and stamina to face the challenge? When we address hardship with faith and determination, it yields endurance.

[…] knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope;

Romans 5:3-4 NASB2020

James calls it “the testing of [our] faith” (James 1:3.) The old testament calls it “the refiner’s fire” (Malachi 3:2.) We are tested “as gold is tested” (Zechariah 13:9.) These scriptures refer to a process where the dross or impurities are forced to the surface by turning up the heat. Once uncovered, they can be removed, revealing the “proven character” of Romans 5.

This process is not a test of our character. It is a revealing of our temperament. It serves us, Bringing us hope, belief in ourselves, and God’s wisdom and providence. Faith is the key. The application of faith in difficult circumstances reveals God’s faith in us.

In the world you will have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.

John 16:33

Lord, as we face troubles in this world, we must remember your words. Give us strength and courage as we step into uncertain predicaments and troublesome situations. Bring forth our true character and make it shine like gold. Please give us an enduring spirit and a passion for your plan in our lives—May our faith mirror your faith in us.
