Chains Must Shatter

Below the water line,
without an oxygen source
Out on the edge,
detached and thrashing

Biting at the bit,
blaming lack of parental attention
In a dark, cold place,
there's wailing and gnashing
Escape requires
connection with tenderness
The exit sign flashes
the wrong color, red

Fear of vulnerability
is an overlooked analysis
Frigidly craving love,
is still better than dead
Normality, a misdirection
intended to shame
Fleeting relief rarely
repairs the broken heart

Enduring resolution
requires transformation
Chains must shatter
before recovery can start
