A New Kingdom

Jesus brings with him a new kingdom, a new rule. A new sovereignty and a new convention, not based on ownership, commerce, or territory.

Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not of this realm.”

John 18:36 NASB2020

In this new kingdom, people are freed, not enslaved. Everyone takes care of one another. The only urgency is bringing others into the light that is Jesus Christ. There are no deadlines or rush hours. No bills are due or overdrawn accounts. No loneliness or alienation. No state lines or political capital. The only admission is confession and obedience to His commands to love God with all our being and love each other as we love ourselves.

When Pilate asks Jesus, “You are a king, then!” Jesus concludes his response with “[…] for this purpose I have been born, and for this I have come into the world: to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to My voice.” (John 18:37)

This truth (which sets us free) is the rule of His kingdom. Right relationships with Him and with others make His kingdom observable and recognizable. To make His kingdom known, we must live the life He has called us to and repeat His message to all (who have ears to hear.) Then rinse and repeat. As we draw on His rivers of Living Water, we can’t hold on to this life-giving and affirming water, we must carry it to others.

Jesus, thank you for the truth that sets us free and holds us together and secures your kingdom. Help us to wield this truth in our interaction with those still isolated and in darkness. Make us bold and mighty warriors of Your kingdom.
