Praying For Others

This entry is part 3 of 6 in the series Prayer

Praying for others should be an honor. Joining in the intercessory prayer of our Lord, Jesus Christ, should bring us peace, joy, and a sense of satisfaction. Bringing the suffering, hardship, healing, and redemption of others into our personal acts of worship and spiritual surrender makes us willing and active participants in the crowning work of Christ’s consecration and sanctification of His people.

Until He calls us into martyrdom or otherwise calls us home, there is no better way to demonstrate our love for God and others than intercessory prayer.

Greater love has no one than this, that a person will lay down his life for his friends.

John 15:13 NASB2020

‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the great and foremost commandment. The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’

Matthew 22:37-39 NASB2020

Entering into the process of intercessory prayer should be:

  • An act of service
  • A declaration of God’s Love (and Grace and Mercy)
  • A sacrifice of our egos and stubbornness
  • An agreement (covenant) with our Lord’s message and ministry
  • An opportunity to reflect on His goodness
  • A moment to partake in God’s intended purpose for us

How should we pray?

  • Pray in the name of Jesus. The name above all names.
  • Pray with scripture appropriate to the issue being faced
  • Pray regularly and repeatedly with enthusiasm and dedication
  • Pray for specific needs
  • Pray with the help of the Holy Spirit – asking for guidance, discernment, and wisdom
  • Pray with LOVE

Lord, thank you for inviting us into your intercessory work. You bless us with inclusion into your mission. You honor us with great purpose when we should be seeking ways to celebrate you. May our participation and faith in your promises be a sweet aroma to you (Philippians 4:14-23.) Continue to reveal to us the necessity for lifting up our brothers, sisters, children, and friends (and yes, even our enemies, imagined and real) in intercession and blessing.
